What is Data Science?
Data science is largely comprised of data collection and analysis to help with important business decisions. It is also about using data to create data products. For example, if you've ever received a recommendation from Amazon, Netflix or in your Facebook newsfeed, you have seen a data product. These companies use the information they have about you to predict what you will like and sell it to you.
In the private sector, data science is used to Make More Money (by increasing revenue or cutting costs). However, there are other exciting applications for data science in public health and medicine (e.g., predicting disease outbreaks, diagnosing illness), education, social welfare (e.g., predicting risk of child abuse), ecology and environment (e.g., counting the number of trees on our planet, predicting natural disasters) and many more.
What Do Data Scientists Do?
Data scientists typically use statistics and probabilities, computer programming, and communication skills in their day-to-day work. Their day-to-day work is centered around mining large volumes of data for key business insights.
